The GPSMap 76Cx features the powerful SiRF GPS navigation chip for supreme accuracy in all conditions.
You can use the 76Cx's memory card slot with preprogrammed microSD cards from Garmin (sold separately) that provide topographic maps, city streets, and nautical charts. In fact, the unit is compatible with most Garmin MapSource products, including BlueChart, City Navigator, U.S. Topo 24K, and U.S. Topo and Recreational Lakes with Fishing Hot Spots. The unit comes preloaded with an Americas autoroute basemap that provides automatic routing capabilities including highways, exits, and tide data. There's also a preloaded marine point database. You can even get turn-by-turn directions when you're driving, and an integrated trip computer provides odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, and more.

The 76Cx's 2.6-inch, 256-color TFT color display is designed to present mapping and trip information clearly and accurately in any lighting conditions. Plus, the case is lightweight, rugged, and water resistant to IEC 60529 IPX7 standards (can be submerged in one meter of water for 30 minutes). Marine users will also like the fact that the 76Cx floats. When using two AA alkaline batteries, you'll get up to 30 hours of battery life from the unit.

Another key feature of the 76Cx is the 10,000 point automatic track log; 20 saved tracks (500 points each) let you retrace your path in both directions. Meanwhile, there's a large numbers option for easy viewing, as well as a dual-position display mode. The unit also includes built-in celestial tables for best times to fish and hunt, as well as sun and moon calculations. You also get audible alarms for anchor drag, arrival, off-course, proximity waypoint, and clock.

The 76Cx's trip computer provides odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, and more. Meanwhile, a fast processor allows the 60Cx to provide quick auto-routing, turn-by-turn directions, and audio alerts when you use the optional MapSource software, which can be stored on the unit's included 128 MB microSD card. Downloading information is quick with the USB or serial port interfaces. Using the dedicated serial port, the 76Cx can share navigation instructions with repeaters, plotters, and autopilots.

If you like the features of the 76Cx but require an electronic compass and a barometric altimeter, check out the Garmin GPSMap 76CSx.

So far I like it, really 4.5 stars.

Review Date: June 8, 2006
Reviewer: MB in the OC, So. CAL
Having used a huge number of GPS units over many years, I must say that the 76CX is very good.

Pro's
Removable memory (now up to 1GB)
Can be powered from 2 AA cells for a long time.
Nice Color Screen, no back light needed daytime
Water resistant
No easy to break off parts
Can be powered from USB connection!
Memory Cards(Micro SD) can be written to outside of unit
Does a good job routing for automobile use
Has marine and geocaching functions as well as hiking stuff like track logs etc.
fair pricing
Lots of optionally available maps
Garmin support is good including firmware updates that add functionality.

Cons:
Screen could be larger
Requires purchase of maps for street level(but this keeps price down, for people who aren't driving with it)
Even with car kit unit doesn't talk at all("turn right next" or more recent auto units that pronounce street names)like the NUVI units do.

That said this and the 60 series are the only GPS units that you can drive with as well as use for hiking/boating/geocaching that work really well. The Magellan units that support both Meridian and Explorist are not nearlly as nice from a hardware, software and firmware point of view.

I will keep this unit until Garmin comes out with one that talks and pronounces street names as well as all the other functions that the 76 has. Would have also cosidered the 60CX but the price of the 76CX was better with the rebate offered this month.
very nice...

Review Date: September 2, 2007
Reviewer: Der Doktor, Münster, Westfalen
...but there are two things that annoy me:
The color display is significantly smaller than the one on the older monochrome gpsmap 76.
The screws on the back of the unit quickly get rusty when exposed to saltwater.

If you don't need a device that floats, I'd recommend buying its prettier sister, the 60csx for the following reasons: it is smaller (but its display is the same size), it looks nicer and it has the keys in the right place (below the display).
don't listen to the rookies

Review Date: March 16, 2009
Reviewer: where the fish R, Northern WI
the majority of the negative reviews are form people that want a GPS for their car, (rookies). I use mine exclusively for fishing and hunting, and its one of the best I've seen. I bought the topo map chip for the mid-west, and was blown away. it had all of the lakes I didn't expect, as well as the ones I did, with contour lines far better (3 ft in some cases) than any DNR map I've ever seen. the topo map chip was [...] bucks, but was well worth the price. The map chip included all boat landings, nav. hazzards, POI's, major and forest roads, and lake contours as accurate as my new depth finder. If your lonely and want a GPS that talks, go get a tom tom, but if you want a serious GPS for a serious outdoors man, you won't be disappointed.
Good choice for me

Review Date: December 21, 2009
Reviewer: M. Coffing, Homer, Alaska

I purchased the 76CSX from Amazon in July 2007. Since then I have used it on the boat (I am on the water here in Kachemak Bay-Cook Inlet Alaska almost every weekend from late April through September), while flying in small aircraft throughout Alaska, and while driving both in Alaska and the "Lower 48."

The unit does not come with detailed maps; those have to be purchased. I purchased Bluechart Americas v9, Topo US- 2008, and City Navigator - North America. These were all purchased on CD/DVD media. My unit came with a 128mbt micro-SD chip in it. I replaced that with a 2 gig chip. Changing out the SD chip is very easy.

Like anything new, it takes a while to get to know how to use it. The online Garmin Knowledgebase for this model was very helpful to me. Customer support, when I had questions, was better than average via email and when talking to a "live" person.

Once purchased, folks should set up their "MyGarmin" account .... makes it much easier to download software updates for the unit and also update map products that they have purchased.

The unit has an excellent GPS receiver. It locks on to satellites and hangs onto them in the house, in the cabin of the boat, in small aircraft and in the car without any external antenna connected. I might also mention that I have carried this unit inside of a daypack while riding snowmobiles and it has not dropped the satellites. Battery life is about 15 hours and when they go dead, you can change them out without losing your real time nav data.

I also purchased the 12-volt power outlet cord and a RAM windshield mount.
Garmin Mapsource, included with the unit, has been a valuable tool that I use frequently to download travel routes/tracks from the GPS to the PC. There it can be saved, emailed and printed as a PDF and also layered over Google Earth.

One thing that I have found is that it is best to download the track from the GPS to the PC before "saving" it on the GPS. The data will then show a very detailed track with speed, elevation, lat/lon position, direction and bearing for every point shown on the track. If the track is saved on the GPS before it is downloaded, the resulting track will not be as detailed, as the Saved Track mode on the GPS strips out 5 of every 6 points saved. This is common with many other Garmin units too.

When navigating in the car to a specific address, it does reroute you if you miss a turn. We have found the City Navigator maps to be quite useful not only for the map data, but also because you can easily find locations and a text listing of names, addresses and phone numbers for thousands of hotels, motels, gas stations, shopping centers, restaraunts, and points of interes. It is almost like haveing a phone book with you. This feature makes finding a place to stay or eat very easy when making those long road trips in the Lower 48. This data is only as current as the date you purchased the maps and may not be as easily updated as auto-specific GPS units.

The screen is what you would expect in a hand-held multi function GPS. If you are looking for GPS for your auto that has maps preloaded so it is ready for a road trip upon its arrivel, this is probably not your best choice. If you need a single portable GPS unit that can serve in many environments: marine, hiking and auto road trips, this is a good choice provided you also buy the maps you will need and take the time to learn how to use it. GPS Photo-link also works well with this unit.

Great Unit

Review Date: February 13, 2006
Reviewer: Randy Given, Manchester, CT USA
This is a great step from my 12XL. I got this along with City Select North America 7. The standard 128M hold all of the states in my area (New England), but I still upgraded to the 512M memory and plan to upgrade to the 2G when it is readily available (has been released at this time, just cannot find one to buy). The maps are shown easily and the variety of controls is sufficient. I bought mine with a Garmin bike mount to put on my handlebar. Good so far. Glad I got it.

  • Between two waypoints
  • Between two Find search results
  • Between a waypoint and a Find search result
Once you have created a route, view it on the map with the View option. The device will store up to 50 routes in internal memory.

Routing is possible for both walking and in-vehicle situations, using either the direct or road routing settings. On-device routing for road routes should be used for fairly short routes, with longer routes best generated on the desktop in advance and transferred to the GPS. The on-device road routing is fine for cross-town and in-state routes and includes an audible beep warning before each turn, as well as the ability to recalculate routes when you stray off course.

Product Description

Everyone who has been touched by the magic of geocaching should read this book and reserve a prominent place for it on their bookshelf.

— Richard Niles, Today's Cacher

Technology can be more than just practical&emdash;it can also be fun. And fun is exactly what you'll have when you try geocaching. It's a high-tech treasure-seeking game that uses the Global Positioning System (GPS).

Because geocaching combines the outdoors, puzzles, and adventure, everyone&emdash;from kids to kayakers, and retirees to rock climbers&emdash;can easily become involved. You'll join a rapidly expanding worldwide network of people who hide containers of "prizes" in the wilderness, suburbs, and even in the middle of cities, then provide clues for others to discover them.

Borrowing from the classic pursuits of orienteering and letterboxing, geocaching can be as easy as a walk in the park or as challenging as scuba diving to a hundred feet. You don't need to be an expert in electronics, navigation, or even hiking to start.

Ready for an outdoor adventure?

An exciting outdoor adventure for the whole family, geocaching is a high-tech GPS-based treasure hunt. Your mission as a Geocacher is to find them.

  • Unlike any other GPS on the market, the Geomate.jr comes preloaded with approximately 250,000 geocache locations covering all 50 U.S. states
  • Simply go outside, turn it on and follow the arrow and distance to your closest geocache. Hit the "Next" button and the Geomate.jr will take you to the next closest geocache
  • To make the hunt a little easier, along with the geocache location, you also get information like terrain, difficulty, size of the geocache, and the geocache code
  • With the Geomate.jr you can also set a "home" waypoint so you can always navigate back to where you started. We think of it as a "get lost proof" feature
  • A "found geocache" log allows you to mark geocaches as found and review them later
  • Includes core GPS functionality like latitude, longitude, height, heading and GPS tracking information
  • Gets more than 12 hours of operation out of a couple AAA batteries (not included)
  • Based on high-sensitivity SiRFstarIII GPS technology, the Geomate.jr delivers excellent GPS performance and accuracy
  • With new geocaches being added every day, an optional Geomate.jr Update Kit allows you to add all the newest geocaches for the U.S., get geocaches for other countries, or even give your Geomate.jr a nickname!

Whether you are taking a road trip, visiting the relatives, camping, or just taking a stroll through the local park, the Geomate.jr is always ready to go and is perfect for that spontaneous outdoor adventure with friends or the family.

Product Description

The key to success in life is knowing where you are, where you've been, and where you're going. Garmin's full-featured GPSMAP 76 puts all of that information in the palm of your hand, mapping your movements off-road or on--and even afloat. Plus, its extensive features, PC connectivity, and extensive add-on map options make it powerful enough for practically any need.

About the size of a small paperback book and weighing less than 8 ounces, the GPSMAP 76 fits comfortable in the palm of your hand, but is a bit big to carry in a shirt pocket. Using the unit requires almost no setup. Just put in two AA batteries, turn it on, go outside, and wait. In about a minute or so it will determine your location. It's accurate to about three meters, thanks to the unit's support of WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System), which augments GPS signals for even greater accuracy.

Knowing your longitude, latitude, and altitude doesn't mean much without a little context. That's where GPSMAP 76's backlit LCD display comes in, displaying your location on detailed maps. The unit comes with a built-in basemap that includes major roads, railroads, rivers, and lakes for the U.S. and Canada, as well as a high-level worldwide map. The unit also has 8 MB memory for storing maps from optional CD-ROMS; available maps include topographical maps, BlueChart marine cartography maps, as well as city maps with detailed information on city streets and points of interest.

The eight buttons, directional rocker thumbpad, and menu-based interface made it simple to access all of the unit's features and customize the display. For instance, it's a simple matter to use the buttons to set and name waypoints and build planned routes. Extra features include information on tides, sunrise and sunset, and a trip computer for seeing how far you've traveled and your average speed.

To test the GPSMAP 76, we used the included serial cable, connected it to our PC, and loaded it up with topographical maps using the optional United States topographical map disc. We then hit the road and headed for Muir Beach north of San Francisco. It tracked our progress along Highway 1, and once we reached our destination, we found it very simple to use. It showed both the elevation of the hills as well as the paths we could take. The zoom-in and zoom-out function made it simple to plan out and automatically measure the distance of our intended route.

After walking for a while and enjoying the scenery, we used the TracBack mode to guide us back to our car. The unit automatically stores waypoints as you walk along, letting you display the way home clearly on the map. We even used the TracBack capability to guide us on the roads back to the freeway.

The GPSMAP 76 comes in handy almost anywhere, whether you're hiking, driving, boating, or wandering around a city as a tourist. Its easy-to-use interface makes it immediately useful to novices, and as you learn to exploit its programmability and features, it can become an extremely powerful navigation tool. --Ken Feinstein
